Berlin Master Chefs 2024

Berlin, 22 November 2024 – When it comes to good taste, Berlin has a wide selection to choose from. This was also the case for the twelve-member independent jury, which selected the Berlin Master Chefs 2024 from over 200 candidates and catering establishments in seven categories. Year after year, these represent the gastronomic and culinary diversity of the city and prove that Berlin’s cuisine is characterised by an exciting mix of tradition, craftsmanship and innovation. This year, the award-winning Master Chefs also inspire with a particularly wide variety of culinary approaches.

The jury, consisting of food journalists and experts led by Dr. Stefan Elfenbein, chairman of the jury and author for the magazines “Der Feinschmecker” and “Foodie”, and Tina Hüttl from the Berliner Zeitung, also chairman of the jury, had initially nominated five candidates in each of the categories “Berlin Master Chef 2024”, “Rising Star of the Year 2024”, “Berlin Host 2024”, “Berlin Scene Restaurant 2024”, ‘Berlin Kiezmeister 2024” and “Berlin Bar Culture 2024”. The additional seventh category, “Gastronomic Innovator”, was only announced on the evening of the award ceremony itself. The event was held under the motto “Shine & Dine” and took place in the former C&A building CANK in Neukölln. The 300 guests invited as well as the award winners themselves were able to enjoy the culinary skills of the winning restaurants from the previous year, including the star restaurants Rutz, Hallmann & Klee and Coda.

Finally, the following prizewinners were delighted to receive the honour, which has been awarded since 1997:

  • Berlin Master Chef 2024: Max Strohe from the restaurant “tulus lotrek”
  • Rising Star of the Year 2024: Karl-Louis Kömmler from the restaurant “Loumi”
  • Berlin Host of the Year 2024: Dr. Sahar Sodoudi and Dr. Forough Sodoudi from “DR & DR Middle Eastern Culture and Food Lab”.
  • Berlin Scene Restaurant 2024: Verōnika Berlin
  • Berlin Kiezmeister 2024: “Domäne Dahlem” in Steglitz-Zehlendorf
  • Berlin Bar Culture 2024: “Wax On
  • Gastronomic Innovator 2024: Nadine and Tom Michelberger

Berlin’s governing mayor Kai Wegner congratulated all “Berlin celebrates its Master Chefs. In recent years, top gastronomy in our city has developed successfully and has long been able to stand up to national and international comparison. This year’s awards for Master Chefs once again reflect the quality and diversity of Berlin’s gastronomy scene. Innovation, creativity and sustainability, which are so important in restaurant culture, are also honoured. I would like to congratulate all the prizewinners and thank everyone on the jury and in the organisation who contributed to the success of this year’s competition.”

And even though “only” a small selection of the more than 200 candidates could be chosen as the 2024 Master Chefs, it was clear to see: Variety is part of the city’s culinary DNA. Almost all parts of the world, styles and mixtures thereof are represented: From Thai food in the park, a Japanese-inspired speak-easy bar and Iranian twin sisters with doctorates to the best éclairs in town and a master brewer who helps almost lost original Berlin yeasts back into the limelight and onto the bar counter.

Dr. Stefan Franzke, Managing Director of Partner für Berlin confirms: “Berlin’s gastronomy has always been characterised by being innovative, dynamic and flexible. Food trends and impulses from society are picked up and implemented. With the Berlin Master Chefs, we appreciate the diversity and quality that is reflected in this year’s nominations. In addition, our restaurant culture should not be underestimated as an economic factor - this is what makes the city so liveable and lovable. The gastronomy scene is an integral part of creative Berlin.”
