Capital City Electromobility Conference

1. June 2023 – The number of publicly accessible charging points has increased significantly in the past year: With 2,500 (as of May 2023) such stations, there are now 34 percent more than in 2022.  The number of electric motor vehicles is also increasing. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), almost 60,000 vehicles in Berlin were already electrically powered (purely battery-electric and plug-in hybrids) in the first quarter of 2023 – that is four percent of all motor vehicles registered in Berlin.

Electromobility in times of the energy and traffic transition, what are the strategies of the Federal and State governments, how can the rapid expansion of the charging infrastructure succeed, and what are the business models for the mobility of today and tomorrow – these are the topics that were discussed and debated at the Capital City Electromobility Conference. The Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO, which belongs to Berlin Partner, organized the hybrid event in the Red City Hall for the  11th time.

In addition to 25 contributors from business, science and politics, the two new senators for economics, energy and public enterprises, Franziska Giffey, and for mobility, transport, climate protection and the environment, Dr. Manja Schreiner, were among the participants.

During a tour beforehand, the Senator for Economic Affairs also found out about the current developments of the 18 exhibiting companies. In her opening speech to a packed lecture hall, Senator Franziska Giffey emphasized the special role that e-mobility plays in the energy and transport transition in Berlin. In addition, the appeal, also in terms of charging infrastructure: “We can’t stop now, we have to carry on! It can succeed, but only together.”

Gernot Lobenberg, Head of the Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO: “Despite many sustainable mobility solutions, emissions in the transport sector have not been significantly reduced over the past decade. In order to achieve our climate goals, the focus must above all be on sustainable modes of transport - walking, cycling, public transport as well as electromobility and sharing mobility.”

Another event of the eMO, together with the Chamber of commerce Berlin, deals with exactly this topic, which will be held on June 6 from 18:30 in the Goerzwerk in Berlin-Lichterfelde. The focus will then be on what alternatives, such as sharing and ridepooling or on-demand shuttle services, are needed to make the private car less important for the daily commute.
