Startup Champs Germany

Germany's four leading startup metropolises - Berlin, Munich, Cologne and Hamburg - have joined forces to further strengthen Germany as a business location and to jointly represent it internationally. At the Expo Real real estate trade fair, the four managing directors of the participating economic development organisations signed the “Startup Champs Germany” cooperation agreement.

The main goals of the "Startup Champs Germany" cooperation include:

  • Joint projects to market Germany's four largest startup locations.
  • Increasing the (inter)national visibility of the startup locations involved.
  • Supporting local startup ecosystems through mutual networking and information exchange.
  • Initiatives to further stimulate startup activity, e.g. by promoting female entrepreneurship.

Dr. Stefan Franzke, CEO of Berlin Partner, Berlin's business development agency: “Two years ago, when Berlin overtook London and was voted Europe's most popular place to start a business, I said that sporting competition for first place among the pros was part of it. Even if first place in Europe this year very narrowly goes to London: In Germany, Berlin is by far the undisputed number one startup hotspot. But that is certainly not a given; it is the result of hard work. First and foremost by the founders who put their plans into action with creativity, courage and commitment. It is also an indication that the framework conditions are right. An example: 76 percent of the total capital of 286 million euro invested in the FinTech/InsurTech sector in Germany went to Berlin startups in the first half of the year alone. With the plans for a House of Finance, we are taking another big step on the road to becoming the definitive financial metropolis of the future. The partnership-based cooperation between German startup cities is another feature of the good framework conditions. I look forward to constructive exchanges in this startup city partnership."
