Top 200 Berlin employers

7. July 2023 – Corporations are backing Berlin. That is clearly shown in this year's special supplement of the Berliner Morgenpost "Top 200 – Berlin's largest employers". Almost half a million Berliners and Brandenburgers were employed by the 200 largest employers in Berlin's economy at the end of 2022. On average, the workforces increased by 1.8 per cent compared to the previous year. Despite the tense economic situation, 91 of the companies surveyed in Berlin and in the immediate vicinity continued to increase the number of their employees last year; By contrast, 50 companies had fewer staff at the end of 2022 than in the previous year, according to the key results of this year's survey. Heading the list of the top 200 of the Berlin economy with 25,103 employees is still Deutsche Bahn, followed by the hospital Charité (21,556), the Vivantes-health network (18,090) and the BVG (15,830). Rewe pushed Deutsche Post from 5th to 6th place and Tesla, with an estimated 10,000 employees at the Grünheide Gigafactory, jumped from 74th to 7th place. The Berlin-based e-commerce company Zalando on the other hand, will no longer make it into the top ten in 2023.

In recent years, Berlin's economy has had to face various challenges and transformation processes: demographic change, the energy and mobility transition as well as changes in industry and digitalisation. But Berlin's companies demonstrate dynamism and remain stable even in times of crisis.  For example, Berlin's growth is above the national average; DAX companies are expanding Berlin as a location; trade fairs are again gaining momentum, and with the new skilled labour immigration law, Berlin remains an attractive location for companies and skilled workers from all over the world. All that shows: The metropolis can handle change.

Berlin also scores well abroad with its lived diversity and dynamic economy. In recent years, Berlin has strengthened economic relations with other regions such as South America, Africa and Asia with various networks and cooperations. Large companies are moving to the Spree and the company settlements in 2022 were almost back to pre-Corona levels. Berlin is also making progress in the field of global research. In September 2021, for example, the "Global Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence” was opened in Berlin-Kreuzberg - a branch of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the world's first early warning system for epidemics.

Dr. Stefan Franzke, CEO of Berlin Partner: "Berlin offers companies the opportunity to assemble teams from all cultural areas and from all languages. Not to forget the fantastic knowledge landscape that motivates many to come here. Especially if you are active in the fields of energy, mobility or the health industry - and also in almost all areas of digitalisation - you come to Berlin. The close cooperation between science, established business and startups also attracts companies.”

The Berliner Morgenpost publishes the special supplement every year in cooperation with Berlin Partner. It contains numerous impressions, assessments, figures, data and facts about the Berlin working world and its development. You can find the complete issue as a print or ePaper.
