Welcome to Brain City Berlin

Passing the time while waiting for the next U-Bahn [underground]: In the so-called "Science Station", hidden object pictures by Berlin illustrator Nele Brönner provide travellers a distraction. Topics including global warming, migration, flight and cross-border networking are addressed on 16 panels. They deal with the interaction of nature and man and how deeply the latter intervenes in nature.

The hidden object pictures are 6.20 by 1.80 metres in size and include 669 terms and 258 picture elements. In a playful way, they visualise the most important questions that science is dealing with in the Anthropocene Epoch, the geological age shaped by humans. These are also questions and challenges that are the subject of the work of many researchers at Humboldt-Universität.

The exhibition at the station "Unter den Linden" is a joint project of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the Schiel-Projektgesellschaft, the exhibition agency TheGreenEyl the Büro für prekäre Konzepte (Office for Precarious Concepts) and the illustrator Nele Brönner. The Hintergleis pictures address the central research projects of the scientists

at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) in an artistic way. The Unter den Linden station, which opened on 4 December, 2020, presents itself as a modern "Science Station" that is intended to bring the topic of science into people's everyday lives.

Science and research are the tradition and future of Berlin. To highlight the diversity and strengths of the capital, the Brain City campaign was initiated by Berlin Partner für Wirtschaft und Technologie and the Berlin Partner Science network. In addition to information on the main research areas, career opportunities and stories, renowned scientists as well as young talents and representatives of scientific institutions who, as ambassadors of Berlin-born science, want to inspire people from all over the world for Brain City Berlin.
