Berlin sets trends in digital economy – the 7th Berlin Web Week has started


Digital metropolis Berlin

For a whole week, Berlin becomes the international hotspot for internet, digital economy, startups and digital media. More than 15,000 visitors from all over the world are expected to attend the 7th Berlin Web Week by Saturday. At the official opening, Senator for Economics Cornelia Yzer presented the highlights of the Berlin Web Week 2014 together with Melanie Bähr, Managing Director of Berlin Partner for Business and Technology, Elmar Giglinger, Managing Director of the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg as well as Boris Jebsen, co-founder and CEO of the developer conference droidcon, and emphasized the significance of the event for digital economy in Berlin.     

The Berlin Web Week is a joint initiative of the Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Research of the state Berlin and Berlin Partner for Business and Technology.

Cornelia Yzer, Senator for Economics, Technology and Research: “Berlin is already today a leading startup and digital metropolis. Around 6,000 companies from the sector are developing products and solutions for the global market and generating a turnover of around 9 billion Euros. With the Berlin Web Week as a platform, we want to create added value by bringing together the actors especially at the interfaces and making the promotion offers transparent as well as by raising more attention to the digital location Berlin beyond city limits.”  

Melanie Bähr, Managing Director of Berlin Partner for Business and Technology: “Every year, the digital metropolis Berlin sets path-breaking technological and creative trends, shaping the image of the whole city. With the Berlin Web Week as a comprehensive platform, we want to present the capital’s internet scene to a wide audience in order to display Berlin’s strength as a lighthouse for web innovations and digital technologies both nationally and internationally.”

Elmar Giglinger, Managing Director of the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, presented the MEDIA CONVENTION Berlin, which is taking place within the scope of the Berlin Web Week for the first time this year, at the press conference. “Within few years, the Web Week has become a big success and benefit for the capital region. The Medienboard has accompanied and supported the Berlin Web Week right from the start and we are happy that we have now become a part of it and are able to help making the Web Week yet more attractive by the MEDIA CONVENTION Berlin”, Mr. Giglinger said.   

Boris Jebsen, co-founder and CEO of droidcon is taking his format to the Berlin Web Week for the first time: “The droidcon team is looking forward to being part of the Berlin Web Week together with renowned events such as the re:publica and NEXT Berlin for the first time. Since our foundation five years ago, we have deliberately remained faithful to the location Berlin because here we find a unique mixture of talented developers, startups and established companies from the telecommunications sector essentially shaping the image of each droidcon conference and the associated BarCamp.”

The more than 20 events at the biggest fetival of Europe’s digital scene will include international conferences, BarCamps, trade shows, pitches, hackathons, matchmaking dinners, parties and meet-ups. This year’s particular event highlights are the digital conference re:publica, the trend conference NEXT Berlin, the media congress MEDIA CONVENTION and the developer conference droidcon Berlin.  

The Berlin Web Week is the place where the most important makers, users and personalities of the internet meet. The goal of the individual events is to emphasize, design and further develop Europe’s digital scene. At the same time, the Berlin Web Week as a comprehensive platform unites the capital’s internet scene under one roof in order to position Berlin as an important location for new web trends and digital technologies.
