Capital City Conference on Electromobility at Berlin City Hall

The number of charging points for electric cars in Berlin has reached a new high. According to Stromnetz Berlin, there are currently around 28,000 charging points installed in the capital. Of these, 4,200 are publicly accessible, all others are used privately, i.e. at home or at work. In order to meet the constantly increasing demand for charging capacity and to drive expansion even more comprehensively, Berlin is also pushing for expansion in private areas, as this is where around 80% of charging processes take place. A corresponding catalogue of measures is set out in the “Overall charging infrastructure strategy 2030 for the State of Berlin”. According to the Federal motor transport authority (KBA), almost 72,000 vehicles in Berlin were electrically powered in the first quarter of 2024 – including around 2,350 heavy commercial vehicles and 230 buses.

These and other topics will be the focus of this year's Capital conference on electromobility on 3 July 2024 in Berlin City Hall. Around 700 participants have registered for the on-site presence and the live stream, and 25 contributors from business, science and politics will discuss the expansion of the charging infrastructure, potential for e-trucks and sustainable mobility in districts. Among others, the Senator for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises, Franziska Giffey, and the new Senator for Mobility, Transport, Climate protection and the Environment, Ute Bonde, will be present. The keynote speech by Prof. Helena Wisbert, Director of the Centre for Automotive Research, will address the topic “The future of electromobility - a global perspective”.

The Capital City Conference on Electromobility has been organised by the Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO once a year in Berlin City Hall since 2011.

Franziska Giffey, Senator for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises:

“Berlin is well on the way to becoming a climate-neutral city. This also includes designing the transport sector in a climate-friendly manner. Our goal is a future-oriented and modern mobility in Berlin that reconciles the mobility needs of an agile urban society with the issue of sustainability. To this end, we promote low-emission mobility solutions and support the introduction of the necessary technology. This strengthens economic development, creates jobs, improves the environment and thus the quality of life in our city. Berlin is an excellent location for this and has developed into a hub for electromobility in recent years. The Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO, as part of the Berlin Partner business development agency, supports our companies in the transformation of mobility and thus takes on an important task.”

Dr Stefan Franzke, CEO, Berlin Partner:

“Functioning and climate-friendly mobility is crucial for Berlin’s attractiveness. Intelligent mobility solutions create jobs and strengthen our business location. Berlin is leading the way in electromobility and is a pioneer in Germany. The Capital City Conference on Electromobility is therefore an important meeting place where all stakeholders come together to promote forward-looking mobility for Berlin further. Only together can we achieve our goal of making Berlin fit and competitive for the future.”

Gernot Lobenberg, Head of the Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO:

“Berlin is already well positioned for the ramp-up of electromobility, both in the public and private areas. By 2030, the demand for charging facilities will increase sevenfold. This is a challenge that we must all tackle together. To this end, we have defined 29 measures in the “Overall charging infrastructure strategy 2030 for the State of Berlin”, which we are now implementing with many partners and investors. The State of Berlin remains a pioneer and continues to invest in the concerted development and expansion of the charging infrastructure.”

About the eMO:

The Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO supports the market ramp-up of electromobility and the use of new, innovative mobility solutions for sustainable commercial transport. As a State agency, we support the goals of the State of Berlin and are part of the Berlin business development agency Berlin Partner für Wirtschaft und Technologie GmbH. The tasks of the eMO include the dissemination and testing of new mobility solutions and the management of central State projects. The financing of the eMO and its measures is primarily provided by the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises and by numerous partners from business, science and the public sector in Berlin and Brandenburg.
