New inventory figures for e-cars in Berlin
Despite production bottlenecks and supply chain problems, the number of electric vehicles in Berlin and Brandenburg continues to increase. According to current figures (as of 1.7.2022) from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 42,963 electric vehicles are registered in Berlin and 29,906 electric vehicles in Brandenburg.
Overall, electric cars are doing better than the market as a whole, which is an indication that more and more people are opting for CO2-free electric mobility, despite ongoing uncertainty about future funding conditions. Increased ranges and the progressive expansion of charging infrastructure ensure that the market ramp-up of electromobility will continue. Nevertheless: The general unfavourable economic situation, the war in Ukraine and the consequences of the lockdowns in China with the associated supply chain problems and production bottlenecks are currently also slowing down sales of battery electric and plug-in hybrids globally.
Gernot Lobenberg, Head of the Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO at Berlin Partner: “Commercial transport continues to play an important role in the conversion to electromobility, as more than half of all electric cars in Berlin are registered for commercial use. However, to decarbonise transport, we also need more charging infrastructure, especially at home and at work, as well as other urban and climate-friendly solutions, such as electric cargo bikes.”
Of the electric cars, 48% are pure battery electric vehicles (BEV) and 52% are so-called plug-in hybrids (PHEV). 56.6% of the vehicles (22,567) are used commercially in Berlin, 43.4% (17,311) of the vehicles are for private use. Commercial traffic, therefore, plays a decisive role in electromobility in urban areas.
In Brandenburg as a non-city State, the proportion of commercial use is lower at 33.7% (BEV 53% / PHEV 47%).
At the same time, the number of vehicles with combustion engines in Berlin fell from 1,166,824 in the second quarter of 2021 to 1,135,715 in the second quarter of 2022, and in Brandenburg from 1,410,120 to 1,392,693 vehicles with combustion engines.
