Tailwind for the Capital City Electromobility Conference

In Berlin and Brandenburg, the number of electric vehicles is increasing: according to current figures (1.4.2022) of the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), Berlin already has 37,363 electric cars and Brandenburg has 25,912 electric cars in operation. More than one in five newly registered cars in Berlin is electric. Commercial use is therefore also gaining in importance. Of the electric cars in Berlin, 57.5% of vehicles (21,484) are used for commercial purposes, while 42.5% (15,860) are for private use.

These are the current figures, which will also play a role at the Capital City Electromobility Conference 2022 on 29 June 2022, when sustainable and innovative mobility in the capital region will be discussed.

The event of the Berlin mobility industry of the Berlin Partner Agency eMO - which forms a network with around 60 partners from science and business - will be held on site in the Berlin City Hall and as a live stream. Among others, Senator for Economics Stephan Schwarz and State Secretary Tino Schopf from the same institution, Transport Senator Bettina Jarasch, Parliamentary State Secretary from the BMDV Daniela Kluckert and Christian Hochfeld, Director of Agora Verkehrswende will be present.

More than 600 participants have registered to take part in the Red City Hall or to watch the live stream. 23 speakers and panelists will feature in the program of lectures, keynotes, discussion rounds, future scenarios, pecha kuchas and one-minute pitches. The motto this year is: Berlin’s business community – Sustainably mobile

Commercial transport plays a decisive role in electromobility in urban areas. In order to encourage small and medium-sized businesses to convert to electric vehicles, the Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises launched the incentive scheme “Wirtschaftsnahe Elektromobilität” (WELMO). The scheme is primarily intended to promote small and lightweight vehicles, commercial vehicles and charging infrastructure.

Stephan Schwarz, Senator for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises: “Berlin is currently in the midst of a transformation process. It is therefore important to keep sight of the various requirements to ensure that mobility is efficient, climate-neutral and sustainable. We are seeing clear developments in terms of electromobility in our city, but we also know that this needs to happen more quickly and effectively. The capital offers a key advantage here. Berlin-Brandenburg is increasingly becoming an industrial hub for electromobility. More and more businesses are moving here, from start-ups to global corporations, and from research to assembly. The necessary innovations are happening here and there are direct channels and interlinking production chains. This is also a development that we can specifically drive further.

A prerequisite for the attractiveness of e-mobility is the further expansion of the charging infrastructure. There are currently around 3,200 publicly accessible charging points in Berlin and Brandenburg. Increased development is also taking place in private, publicly accessible spaces such as quick-charging hubs at petrol stations, in retail and the housing industry as well as on public roads by the Berliner Stadtwerke on behalf of the Senate Department for the Environment, Mobility, Consumer and Climate Protection.

Another program that the eMO supports is MOMA berlin. This is where operational mobility management comes in, with the topics of bicycles, company tickets, shared vehicles, mobility budget and the conversion of the vehicle fleet to electromobility. Advice for companies in this area is funded by the “Wirtschaftsnahe Elektromobilität” (WELMO) of the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Businesses.

Dr Stefan Franzke, CEO, Berlin Partner: The good news is: According to a recent study, Berlin is one of the most sustainable cities in the world. Nevertheless, the challenges in the areas of urban mobility and sustainability remain great. Here, our eMO team at Berlin Partner is working very successfully to increase the benefits for all of us and to advance the mobility transition further.”

Gernot Lobenberg, Head of the Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO at Berlin Partner: “The climate goals cannot be achieved without electromobility and the shift to sustainable modes of transport such as public transport, bicycles and smaller, shared vehicles. Commercial traffic in particular, which accounts for around a third of traffic in Berlin, plays a decisive role here. Most electric vehicles are commercially registered and almost 30 providers of “sharing mobility” for bicycles, scooters, cars and others are active in Berlin. Today, companies, public authorities and other organisations in particular have a wide range of options for rethinking and sustainably organising their business trips and the journeys of their employees.”

About the eMO:

The Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO supports the market ramp-up of electromobility and the use of new, innovative mobility solutions for sustainable commercial transport. As a State agency, we support the goals of the State of Berlin and are part of the Berlin business development agency Berlin Partner für Wirtschaft und Technologie GmbH. The tasks of the eMO include the dissemination and testing of new mobility solutions and the management of central State projects. The financing of the eMO and its measures is primarily provided by the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Businesses and by numerous partners from business, science and the public sector in Berlin and Brandenburg.
