Berlin’s healthcare industry is booming

Berlin, 20 November 2024 - Things are lively in Berlin and Brandenburg: With a total of eight technology parks in the field of Life Sciences and a total area of around 250,000 square metres, the infrastructure in the capital region is unique in Germany in terms of its size and diversity. This can be read, among other things, in the new Life Sciences Report 2024|2025 published by the Berlin-Brandenburg Healthcare Industry Cluster – HealthCapital. The report highlights six key areas with particularly strong research and translation activities: In addition to cell and gene therapies, the authors focus on computational biology and medical informatics, precision diagnostics, medical technology, digital health and technologies for prevention, rehabilitation and care.

The so-called Life Sciences, an umbrella term for scientific disciplines that deal with processes and structures relating to living beings, have long offered a great deal of development potential to stakeholders and companies based in Berlin and Brandenburg. In this context, the strength of the capital region is revealed in significant figures: With more than 300 Biotech and over 380 MedTech/Digital Health companies, the healthcare industry continues to grow. Thanks to the high research density of around 40 research institutions related to Life Sciences and the numerous networking opportunities, Berlin-Brandenburg offers the best conditions for research and development. Around 22,000 companies with around 410,000 employees are working to make the healthcare industry and Life Sciences one of the strongest economic sectors in the region. The focus is always on cooperation with those organisations that are responsible for the day-to-day care of patients and people in need of healthcare support. These include 145 hospitals and a large number of inpatient rehabilitation and care facilities as well as care services, but also the Charité, one of the largest university hospitals in Europe, and the Berlin laboratory of Charité Vivantes GmbH, Europe’s largest hospital laboratory.

Due to the large number and diversity of stakeholders involved, the Life Sciences Report 2024|2025 is also very close to the action: In a total of 5 short interviews with 28 testimonials, experts from the region talk about the topics that drive them forward and that HealthCapital Berlin-Brandenburg stands for. In addition, the report provides an overview of the region’s infrastructure. The development of further areas is expected in the coming years – corresponding new construction projects for research and cooperation have been started in various locations. The linked Life Sciences Directory, which lists more than 760 stakeholders from industry, start-ups and research institutions in the healthcare sector in the capital region, also offers the opportunity to network.
